Imagine that you go to work like you normally do every day, you work hard at your job like you normally do. When pay day comes your boss says hey I owe you one. You smile knowing you did a good job and go on.
The next day you go to the grocery store and you tell the cashier and tell them hey I owe you one. Then she goes to her boss and tells him that you owe him a favor.
The boss gathers the favors he’s collected and gives one to the cashier and gives one to everyone else who helped collect favors, then keeps the rest for himself.
At its innermost roots. Money is just a system of promises of future favors passed from one person to the next.
Ok now consider this. Lets say you have someone who wants to get rid of something but not badly enough to want to give it away for free. So you pay them a little bit to make up the difference. You don’t actually want the item but you know its worth more favors than you payed in promises for favors. So you take that object to somebody who does want it, and they give you some of their promises for future favors.
You did very little work at all but you just got paid more than you had before.
Now lets say that you collect enough favors to pay someone else to do the work for you. Or better yet to buy or rent a machine that you don’t have to pay to do the work for you. Then you can collect the rewards of the work without having to do the work yourself.
So what is money?
